Emergency Power Systems

Emergency power systems are expensive assets and are critical to maintaining safe building operation in the event of a power failure.

Emergency power systems, such as generators, must be inspected, tested and maintained in accordance with their manufacturer’s operation and maintenance instruction manual as well as standards and legislation laid out in the “Emergency Electrical Power Supply for Buildings” CSA C282:24 and NFPA 110.

With this in mind, there are several inspections, tests, and maintenance that are performed at different times throughout the year (i.e., weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually), by both facility staff and certified / licensed individuals.

Inspections can be thought of as higher-frequency, visual checks on physical conditions such as fuel and fluid levels, condition of batteries, leaks, temperature of room, obstructions to equipment, etc.

Whereas testing is confirming operability, and maintenance is cleaning, replacements, repairs / adjustments that support longevity of the asset.

It’s important that for all of these types of work, that records, either paper or electronic, are kept.
